Supporting Statement
Most Level 3 heat pump courses take an engineer’s money, their week off work, and give them a certificate at the end of it. Engineers pass a multiple-choice exam with four possible answers and three attempts. They walk out qualified on paper and still don’t feel confident installing a heat pump on their own. The government’s official “trained” register is full of people this describes.
Installergy is built to close that gap. It’s a new Level 3 qualification, accredited by NOCN and regulated by Ofqual, recognised as an MCS certification route. Lewis Litherland, Heat Geek’s Installer Network Lead, sat down with NOCN directly to design it around one question: what’s actually broken in the courses installers are already paying for.
Written by installers, for the installers who come next. Heat Geek didn’t outsource this to a curriculum team. A group of working, currently-active installers — Jim Lacey, Damon Blakemore, Liam Knowles, Jon Miles, James Oldfield, Shane Kosic, and Lee Morton — gave up their own time to decide what the course should teach and film it themselves, on their own phones, in real homes. The footage is unpolished on purpose. It’s an installer talking you through the job the way they’d talk you through it on site, not an actor reading a script. Heat Geek is entering this award on behalf of every installer who put their knowledge into this course, not as a corporate submission.
It covers real-world design, install, and commissioning practices. Most competing courses pick either install or design. Installergy teaches all three, because an engineer who only understands installation still needs to know why a design decision was made and what “correct” looks like at commissioning, the stage most courses treat as an afterthought.
Every module demands a 100% pass mark. There’s no guessing through this course. An engineer can’t reach the practical assessment without proving they’ve actually understood every module first.
The practical assessment is a real installation, in a real home, assessed by a working installer. Not a training bay with a component tagged with a number they need to match up to the word for that component. Candidates submit a portfolio of evidence captured through Heat Geek’s own quality assurance app (pipework, components, commissioning data) from an install they actually carried out, and the person reviewing it installs heat pumps for a living.
It’s free for every installer on the Heat Geek network. Any installer who joins gets Installergy at no cost for every member of their team, because raising the standard of one engineer only matters if their whole business comes with them.
Customer feedback:
“I’ve recently completed Heat Geek’s new Installergy training created by Lewis Litherland and have been genuinely impressed by the quality of the content. The course is exceptionally well structured, with clear learning pathways, excellent video explanations, and practical insights that can be applied in real-world scenarios. Whether you’re new to the heating industry or an experienced professional looking to expand your knowledge, the training is accessible, engaging, and valuable at every level. It’s great to see investment in high-quality education that helps raise standards across the industry. I would highly recommend Installergy to anyone looking to develop their technical understanding and stay ahead in an evolving heating and energy sector. Brilliant work by Lewis Litherland and the HG team as always.”
Scale and traction: 4,722 engineers have enrolled in Heat Geek training to date. 2,311 have completed at least one course. 1,549 have passed Mastery, the top tier of the core pathway, each one against a 100% pass mark. Installergy launched in April 2026. In its first ten weeks, 237 engineers started it and 40 have already completed the course.
Plans to grow and expand: We’re expecting 1,000 engineers through Installergy this year. It will constantly evolve as the industry does, and as the knowledge of the installers who contribute content grows with it. It will run alongside a new pathway created by Heat Geek for people entering the heat pump industry, and is just the start of the work Heat Geek plans to do in this officially regulated space.
